Adelaide’s Majestic Minima Hotel has completed its transformation into an art-themed hotel, launching its newly-renovated rooms last month. A handpicked selection of South Australian emerging and semi-established artists were given free rein to transform each of the property’s 46 rooms using a variety of disciplines, ranging from street art to tactile installations. Each room of the hotel now offers the truly unique feeling of waking up having slept in an art gallery. Located in the heart of cosmopolitan North Adelaide, the Majestic Minima Hotel is a sleek, compact boutique hotel that is setting new trends in stylish yet inexpensive city fringe accommodation.

Rawnsley Park Station is now offering a Weekend Walks package for those wanting to explore the Flinders Ranges on foot. A shorter version of its three and five-day guided walks, the weekend package is for people wanting to experience the area’s magnificent scenery and wildlife but have limited time. Available on September 27 and October 19 the package includes two nights’ accommodation in a luxury eco-villa, dinner, guided walks over two days, breakfast, morning tea and late checkout. The walks will be led by the station’s bushwalking guide and author Kym Tilbrook. Contact the station for more dates.

The flagship restaurant at Penfolds Magill Estate Winery has reopened its doors after it was closed for extensive renovations almost two years ago. The restaurant first opened in 1995 at the original 1844 home of Penfolds Wines and Australia’s most prized wine, the Grange. Featuring a collection of Grange wines from 1951 to 2008, the extensive wine list includes the 1962 Bin 60A Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz – nominated as number seven on Decanter magazine’s ‘100 wines to try before you die’ list. The kitchen is headed up by new executive chef Scott Huggins, who offers a menu choice of five and eight course options focussing on locally-sourced ingredients. The newly-renovated restaurant includes bespoke furnishings, a bar and heritage cellar.

A new addition to Adelaide’s flourishing small bar scene, Proof is a sophisticated wine bar and eating house, serving up classic cocktails, fine wines, small plates and toasties. Bartenders in waistcoats prepare cocktails, chefs in ties shuck oysters and patrons sink into leather couches under dim lighting. Opened last month by the team behind Press Food & Wine on Waymouth St, Proof is around the corner at 9a Anster St, Adelaide.

As the third generation in a family of winemakers, turning grapes into wine comes naturally for James Mungall. “I wasn’t forced into it,” he says. “I just grew up around the winery and never thought of doing anything else.” The Adelaide winemaker is the grandson of Giovanni Patritti – an Italian migrant who left his winemaking family for South Australia in 1925. Recognising the potential in Adelaide’s sunshine and fertile soils, Giovanni had leased a hectare of land in Dover Gardens and planted vines less than a year after his arrival. He built a small winery with fellow Italian and friend Cristiano Bissacca and began trading to customers in Adelaide and Melbourne. The family bought vineyards in the McLaren Vale wine region in the 1960s and the business has flourished ever since.

More than 85 years later, Patritti Wines is the only fully-operational, family-owned winery in metropolitan Adelaide. Second and third-generation Patritti family members are among the 20 staff members still working from the original site, making wine and running a cellar door at Dover Gardens. Giovanni’s daughter Ines Patritti is the managing director, sons John and Geoff Patritti are directors and eldest son Peter is a board member. James, who is Ines’ son and one of two winemakers, says the business is a family affair. “We see each other every day,” he says. “We have modernised the winery a lot in the last few years, but we have maintained the old school values and heritage.”

Patritti specialises in small-batch wines, spirits and their popular non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice, which have been exported around the world for more than 40 years. James says he is passionate about the heritage of the winery. “It means a lot to be carrying on the business my grandfather started. When my nonno came from Italy, he leased and then purchased a piece of dirt and that is the same dirt we are still making wine from and using the original cellar.”

6/18 Hours of Melrose, 6-7 October, Flinders Ranges & Outback

Ride like the pros at Santos Tour Down Under

Amateur cyclists will have the chance to live life like a pro-tour rider at January’s Santos Tour Down Under thanks to an initiative between the State Government and Cancer Council SA. The inaugural Beat Cancer Tour will see a limited number of 30 cyclists ride every stage of the Santos Tour Down Under ahead of the professional riders. The full pro-tour experience will extend to accommodation at the Hilton Adelaide with the professionals, all meals and nutrition, a mechanics workshop in the village to service the bikes, a full team kit and medical support. The Beat Cancer Project is a cancer research partnership between SA Health, Cancer Council SA and the soon-to-be-completed South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.

SA restaurants named among the best in Australia

South Australian restaurants have been recognised in the 2014 Restaurant Guide by Australian Gourmet Traveller Magazine. Published for more than a decade, the guide is a well-respected source of information about the top 100 restaurants across the country. Barossa restaurants feature particularly strongly, including Appellation, Henley Farm, FermentAsian, Vintners Bar and Grill, 1918, Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, Artisans of Barossa and Fig22.

Ride for the kids

Cyclists will ride more than 1000km in seven days in a bid to raise more than $150,000 for the Ronald McDonald House. Organised by Connect Sport Australia, the Ride for Sick Kids SA is a charity fundraiser. Twenty riders and seven support staff will start in Mount Gambier on Saturday, November 2 and finish in Adelaide on Friday, November 8, visiting five schools along the way. 

Steve Irwin tribute for SA Whale Centre

A scaled replica of the Steve Irwin ship will be installed in the SA Whale Centre as part of a new exhibition. The centre has teamed up with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for the exhibit, which will be feature latest marine conservation activities and raise awareness about marine conservation in South Australia. The Steve Irwin is the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s ship and has been involved in anti-whaling activities around the world.

Local chocolate maker awarded

Adelaide’s Bracegirdle’s House of Fine Chocolate has taken out the top chocolate categories at the 2013 Royal Adelaide Show for the second year running. The chocolate maker was been crowned Champion Chocolate Exhibit and Most Successful Chocolate Exhibitor categories after winning 21 gold medals at the South Australian Dairy Awards. High-scoring products included the royale gift box and the high thai chocolate. It comes after the company opened a coffee and chocolate cafe at Kensington Rd’s Regal Cinema in July. Winning entries will be on display during the Royal Adelaide Show at the Dairy Hall from September 6-14.

Sweet win for local producer

Kangaroo Island producer Island Pure has also featured strongly at the Royal Adelaide Show’s SA Dairy Awards, winning the Champion Yoghurt category. Its Ligurian bee honey yoghurt took out the top honours, while all three cheese entries took home medals. Island Pure uses sheep milk with traditional Mediterranean recipes to produce its products.

Small bars

Small bars are popping up in unexpected places all over Adelaide and bringing a new vibrancy to the city’s centre. Little Miss Miami on Frome St and Proof on Anster St are among those to open since the State Government introduced a new small bar licence earlier this year. They join other small venues such as Clever Little Tailor on Peel St, Udaberri on Leigh St and Cantina Sociale on Sturt St, with more to come. The new class of liquor licensing cuts red tape for venues that can hold up to 120 people and became active in April 2013.

Now spring has arrived, take time to enjoy the beauty of South Australia and visit its stunning parks and gardens. The Adelaide Botanic Gardens are among the most beautiful in Australia. See waterlilies as tall as you are and lush, green grass. You can also discover miles of nature walks and a lake at Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens in the Adelaide Hills, see water-wise plants and butterflies at Wittunga Botanic Gardens in Blackwood and stop to smell the roses at Ruston’s Rose Garden.
